Need Additional Power?

SunPower by Sun Solar has you covered for your additional power needs. We can easily add more panels to your current system, add a second system, or provide a powerful backup battery for a seamless integration.

How to decide on what is the best option for your home.

When it comes to adding more power, there a few options. These options will bring peace of mind, power, and confidence knowing your home is covered no matter the season.

Should you add more solar panels if your home already has a solar system?

If you are planning on adding an Electric Vehicle or a second Air Conditioning unit for example, it might be a good idea to add 3 or more kilowatts (depending on weather conditions, location and seasons) to your consumption if your system is not covering all of your current needs.

Should I add Battery Storage instead?

If your current system is over producing, you could add a home Battery Storage unit to help charge your electric vehicle or power other areas of the home that pull more power. SunPower’s SunVault™ Storage System could be set to readily kick in on demand. Another option provided by SunPower by Sun Solar is the Tesla Powerwall. Below is a quick reference of each battery unit.

Other reasons why you might want to add more power to your solar system:

  1. You still have free space on your roof and want to take advantage of it.

  2. You purchased a home with an undersized system.

  3. Preparing for future home renovations that will require more power such as new appliances, adding more square feet of livable space, outdoor kitchen, etc.

** If you’re adding additional panels onto your system, you may not be eligible for some of the same incentives (such as tax credits and rebates) that you claimed when you originally installed your system.

Will I be affected by NEM 3.0 if add more power?

To add on to your current system and retain your NEM 2.0 status one cannot exceed adding no more than 10kWh of additional power (within the homeowners 20 years of being grandfathered into NEM 2.0), if adding after the date of April 15th 2023, when NEM 3.0 will be in effect. For example: if a homeowner went solar in 2018, that homeowner has until 2038 to add a maximum 10kWh of additional power. If the additional power exceeds 10kWh, they will be pushed to NEM 3.0.

NEM 2.0 customers can add battery storage later.

Another important nugget of the NEM 3.0 decision is that NEM 2.0 can add battery storage in the future and retain their NEM 2.0 status.

There are two common scenarios where this comes into play:

  1. If you currently have a solar system in California, you won’t be transitioned into NEM 3.0 if you add battery storage after April 14, 2023

  2. If you go solar under NEM 2.0 before the April 14, 2023 deadline, adding battery storage later will not change your NEM 2.0 status

There are several advantages to pairing solar and battery in California, so being able to add battery and remain in NEM 2.0 is a big win for Californians. You can read more about it here.
